As an emergency dentist office, we understand that most of our patients do not anticipate needing our services. Typically, we focus on preventative care, cosmetic dentistry, and restorations. During these appointments, we discuss oral health with our patients and one thing is clear – most people think that if they brush their teeth and have their teeth cleaned, they will never need to deal with a dental emergency. In some regards this is true – keeping your teeth healthy will help to reduce the risk of you damaging them. However, accidents cannot be prevented.
Every year, one in three adults over the age of 65 will suffer from a slip and fall. Impacting people of all ages, slip and falls account for over 9 million visits to the emergency room on an annual basis. These accidents happen at home, work, and virtually everywhere. When they do, teeth can be knocked out or broken in the process.
For those that drive, car wrecks are a frequent occurrence with 5.4 million accidents happening every year.
Children playing sports account for over 5 million accidents every year, many of them resulting in a mouth injury. You can decrease this risk by having a mouthguard created for you and your children. Still, if you, or they, are in an accident, you need to know who to call.
As an emergency dentist office, we encourage you to add our phone number and address to your contacts list so that if you are in an accident, you know who to call. This is a critical step because many people head to the hospital emergency room after damaging a tooth, and this is not the best destination for your teeth. General physicians are highly skilled individuals, but their training does not extend to the dental sciences. They can provide you with medication but they cannot correct any damage to your teeth and visiting the ER will leave you with the same problem that you walked in with – a damaged or knocked out tooth. When you visit our dental office, we will examine you, take x-rays, determine the extent of the problem and then create a plan for how to address it.
In our emergency dentist office, we provide the same services that you can receive in a typical dental appointment. We can restore your cracked or chipped tooth using one of several solutions that include dental bonding, dental veneers, or a dental crown. All of these are tooth-colored and natural looking. Once placed, no one will be able to tell that your tooth was ever damaged. If we are unable to secure a lost tooth in place, we can replace the tooth with a dental bridge or a dental implant. Both solutions are effective, and we can discuss the pros and cons of each during your appointment. The key is to call us immediately after an accident so that we can restore your oral health.
